Chapter 8

Judy

Really Did it This Time

I was woken up by Poppa dragging me out of bed and slamming me into the wall. If Marty had slept with us tonight, the slam would’ve woken him up immediately.

“Baby, what’s wrong?” The look of fire in his eyes scared me for dear life. It didn’t even look like him anymore.

“Where is she?”

“Who?”

He snatched me from one wall to the next. My head banged against it. “Don’t fuck with me, Judy? Where the hell is she?”

“Why would she be here?”

He let me go and attempted to calm down. “I know Maddy. She’s desperate. This is the first place she would go because she knows you’re fucking weak. Where is she? I’m only asking one more time.”

“I don’t know, baby, I wouldn’t lie to—”

My feet were lifted off the ground and his strong hand had a hard grip on my neck. I couldn’t talk or breathe. The more I fought, the more he strangled me. “Are…you…fucking stupid?!” I had never seen him this upset before.

I felt myself losing consciousness right before he easily lifted me and tossed me into the shower. Cold water slammed down on my face, causing me to scream from shock. “She’s in the basement!” Though I was dizzy and disoriented, I followed behind him as fast as I could to the basement. “Poppa, wait,” I said as I made it to the stairs. I then lost my balance and tilted over. He turned around and caught me before I fell and tossed me over his shoulder, carrying me with him.

I watched as he stormed into the basement. The minute they saw each other, I felt the tension like it was thick.

He put me down and pulled the gun from the small of his back. Just before he pulled the trigger, she said, “I’m sorry, Poppa! I’m sorry for what happened in Miami! I’m sorry for coming back, but I had to! Someone tried to kill me.”

He cocked the gun. “You came back and put my family in danger. Bad shit follows you. I should’ve killed you but I won’t make that mistake again.” He rushed over and put the gun in her mouth.

“Wait, I have information,” she mumbled the best she could.

“What?” He took the gun out.

“Before coming, I watched Judy but I wasn’t the only one.”

“Who?”

She described a white man that sounded a lot like my mother’s husband. “Give me your phone, Poppa,” I said. He handed it to me. I googled Donnie and showed her a picture. “This him?”

“Yes! That’s him! That’s him! Please don’t kill me, I can help. Just trust me, Poppa.” When she saw she wasn’t getting through to him, she said, “Judy, please.”

“Don’t say her fucking name! Are you crazy?!” He snatched her up like a child. She looked terrified. She’d never been this scared for her life. Her eyes traveled from me to him. She was scared to even look at me it seemed like. She never let her eyes stay on me longer than a millisecond.
